If you have an especially active mind, the summer months can prove to be both enjoyable and mentally tough in equal measure. The constant feeling that you should be doing something more active and outdoorsy with your time as opposed to the tasks and projects that you need to focus on can make this time of year seem much more of a burden than the revolving cycle of bike rides, sunbathing and beer gardens shown on social media would have you believe.

I found this to be a particularly apparent for myself back in the summer of 2017 when I was juggling a regular full time job by day while pushing to turn STREET TRACK LIFE and 326POWER UK into sustainable full-time projects by night. Watching the sun rise as I drove to one office and subsequently watching it set from the window of another while I pored over spreadsheets and the like, pausing only to see all of the much more active ways that my friends were spending their evenings via Instagram, certainly wasn’t much of an enjoyable experience. The urge to get outside and do something (just anything, no matter what it was) was ever-present and always felt detrimental.

At times like this, I am extremely thankful for cars such as my P10 Primera. It isn’t particularly stylish, cool or aggressive and it certainly isn’t much of a head turner but, what it does offer is complete and utter turn-key enjoyment. If you’ve had a tough day at the office while catching glimpses of the wonderful weather outside, it is the perfect form of driving-related stress relief. It is an entirely usable, completely and utterly enjoyable tool for fifteen minutes of fun at the end of a shift before returning to reality.

There are many cheap and cheerful cars out there that will offer the same thrills but this rusty and slightly odd looking Japanese saloon is my tool of choice.

As I’ve got older, I’ve begun to appreciate these short but regular doses of car enjoyment far more than I ever did before. In the past, I would go above and beyond to spend all week building something that I would be able to enjoy for a couple of weekends a month (if I was lucky). Time isn’t quite on my side as much nowadays, and so I cherish these little moments of kicking the Primera’s metaphorical head in a handful of times a week before returning to the normalities of life much more than the younger me ever would have.

By no means should you stop building that crazy project or put a stop to your extreme track or competition car; not at all! However, I think it is beneficial for all of us who are passionate about cars to be able to indulge in our passion of driving more frequently in order to keep the flame alive and stay in love with our hobby. With the weather now on our side for the coming months (here in the UK, at least), we should all get out and drive for both the health of our passion and our minds. Who knows how much longer we will be able to legally enjoy such simple pleasures…
